Should We TAN??

Many of us feel that tanning is a superficial past time for Caucasians.. (and it is). However, there are also health benefits to tanning that go ignored.

If you live above the 37th parallel you are not getting the proper amount of sunlight to keep your vitamin D levels in the optimal range (especially in the inter months).
Diet nor supplementation can help you accomplish this either.

Therefore quality Vitamin D3 supplements along with a tanning regime (in the winter months) is required to be healthy. Yes Dark and Light skin people should tan as an “alternative” when direct sunlight is not available. Direct sunlight will not be in the winter months.
Direct (unobstructed) Sunlight is the best SOURCE for increase Vitamin D levels. When this cannot be found- a tanning bed is your next best source.

HOW MUCH NATURAL SUNLIGHT IS GOOD?
High Melinated Skin (black tone) = 3 hrs direct sunlight
Medium Melinated Skin(biracial tone)- 1.5 hrs direct sunlight
Low Melinated Skin (White tone)= 20-30 minutes in direct sunlight

HOW MUCH NATURAL TANNING IS GOOD?
*This will be based on several factors.

If using tanning beds- the tanning time ratios change due to the intense rays being exposed to the skin- so its best to check with the tanning facility on the intensity and amount of UVB being provided by the machine to determine the duration in the bed. Always start out slow to determine your tolerance.

**Tanning is an alternative only- SUNLIGHT is the best in maintaining Vitamin/Hormone D levels. Always check your Vitamin D levels supplementing or tanning.
